Coach Nell grew up in Green Bay, WI and played his youth hockey with the DePere Voyagers and Jr. Gamblers in Green Bay. Before playing Team Wisconsin and high school Hockey at Notre Dame Academy. He then went on to get drafted by the Chicago Steel in the USHL where he played two years before earning a Divison 1 scholarship to Bowling Green State University. Where he played three years before signing an entry level contract with the New York Rangers. Coach Nell has just got back to the Green Bay Area after playing 5 years between the AHL and ECHL. Between those experiences Coach Nell has been able to learn from some of the best goalie coaches in the world like Benoit Allaire, Mitch Korn, Steve Briere, Scott Clemmensen and Thomas Speer.

Since his playing career Coach Nell has been goalie coaching for the Men's and Women's Division 3 teams at Marion University along with helping the high school teams of Notre Dame academy, Bayport HS, Fond du lac Springs and the Bay Area Ice Bears Co-op. Along with these teams Coach Nell has also helped with both Green Bay, Fond du lac and Sheboygan youth hockey goalies.
